Irish schools results and pix

Waterford Orienteeering club hosted both the Irish Primary and Secondary schools orienteering championships at Woodstock Gardens, Inistioge, Co.Kilkenny.
A huge thank you to all the club members who turned out on both days to help make the event such a success. Full results on the IOA and IOSG blogs
Best individual performances in the Secondary level came from Denise O'Connor (Presentation Waterford) who saw off the challenge from Anna Hickey (Newtown) and Kate O'Donovan (Nagle Rice, Doneraile) to win the Post Junior Cert Girls category. Newtown retained their team title with Anna Hickey, Andrea Harvey, Nichola Fennell and Becky Barr. The Ursuline team of Rachel Moore, Maggie Doolan, Laoise Doyle and Rachel Butler were 2nd team home.
Robert Pim (Newtown) stormed home in the 1st year boys category in 1st place ahead of Ruairi Ling (Rockbrook, Dublin) and Michael Kelly (Midleton CBS). Newtown picked up the team title for the first time with Robert, George Maclean, Philip Dwan and Mark Morris) ahead of Midleton CBS and Clonakilty.
Waterford teams picked up further prizes in the Senior Boys where Newtown (Kaine de la Haye, Joshua Thiele, Charlie Kelly and Geoff Graham) finished 2nd behind Midleton CBS; and  in the 1st year girls category, the Ursuline (Kate Maguire, Alyson Bermingham, Niamh Murphy and Leah Keating) narrowly pipped Newtown (Leona Quigley, Camilla Benivides, Emma Galloway and Emma Swift) for 2nd place.
The best individual performance in the Primary schools was by Emily Collum from Faithlegg N.S. in the 5th class girls section who won first place. This helped the team finish 2nd behind Convent Primary Mallow. Joanna Meaney, Kate Lynch and Molly Doherty were the other members of the team. There were fine individual runs by Ciara Walsh (Ballyhack in 4th), Rebecca Bawden (Ballyhack in 6th) and Jordan Pim (Dunhill in 7th). Waterpark (Lorna Monahan, Kaya Reynolds, Maya Laura and Hannah Gibney)  finished 3rd team.
In the 5th class boys, Waterpark (Dylan Brennan, Brian Sheridan, Cathal Moran and Jacob Ellicott) finished 3rd behind Scoil Mhuire, Cork and Clonakilty. The best individual was John Manoaghan from Faithlegg who finished a commendable 8th out of 52.
The strongest entry was in 6th class boys where 102 took part. Jacob Pim (Dunhill) was the first local finisher in 14th whilst the Butlerstown pair of Andrew Mulhall (24th) and Jack Walshe (25th) also had good runs.
The 6th class girls was dominated by Mallow but Faithlegg (Cici Tracey, Molly May Powell, Sophie Quinn, Iona Nevin Maguire) finished a pleasing 3rd team in a large field.

Kilbunny results

Thanks to John Casey for planning todays event at Kilbunny woods in Portlaw. Thanks to Norman,  Elizabeth and Veronica for helping on registration. The numbers were swelled by 120 cubs and beavers and their leaders. The yellow course encountered some flooding which gave the 1st Port an advantage! The longer courses encountered a movable depression which caused time loss. Well done to those who did actually get control 218, either you were very persistant or in the wrong place to start with.

Carrickbyrne results

We decided not to wait until June 5th as the emails and blog stated...hope none of you missed it. That problem with the Finish we have been having struck again which means there are no splits. I calculated the times manually and posted results on the IOA website.

Slievecoiltia

Over 60 took part in the SE league event today at Slievecoiltia overlooking Kennedy Arboretum. Full results can be found here.

Planners note: control 209 was marked too far to the west on the map. Some corrections will be made to this area before use the next time. Control 205 was possibly marked a little too far west. The track is marked as indistinct and veers rather more to the west than is shown on the map. Hopefully these two small errors did not spoil your enjoyment. Thank you for your patience.

Forthcoming events

Please note that the event on January 15th is at Slievecoiltia (Kennedy Park) not Carrickbyrne. This will now take place on February 5th. Take signs for Kennedy Arboretum from New Ross. Take road to the left close to the main gate of the Arboretum. Follow this road up to the top of the hill where the start takes place. Avoid running any competitors down on the way up please.
Check out the details of the hill on Mountain Views.

The SE Secondary schools event will take place at Faithlegg woods on 19th January instead of 26th to facilitate the East Munster schools cross country event. The Primary schools is on February 8th at the same venue. More details on the IOSG blog...www.irishschoolso.blogspot.com

Ballyconnery results

Check out the results here. Apologies to anyone who followed the Google map directions on the IOA website and ended up south of Cappoquin. Plans to run light green if there is enough demand as the green is proving too long and/or too challenging for some of the punters.
It's a dogs life...they expect me to chase around the forest all day looking for these silly orange and white things and then what do I get...a bowl of water!
What another loop?...Norman at the spectator control...remember you are running age 19 again
so a brown dotted line on the map is a gully
Big thanks to Jana who did trojan work on computer and registration.

Tower Hill results

A big thank you to Con Murphy and Nigel Pim for organising the event at Tower Hill. Full results can be found at the IOA website. Apologies regarding the use of an older version of the map. There was a break down in the systems. I basically forgot to hit send with the draft course maps to the printer and they remained in drafts!
I received frantic calls in Scotland at the VHI but was unable to solve the problem from Ballater in  Deeside.

Return to Austria

Laura and myself returned to Austria for another bout of 6 day orienteering. Laura found herself running longer courses than me for the first time as she has just entered W20 whilst I have slipped out to M55.
Laura seen here finishing the last day, over 6 km, glad to return to cultural visits in Vienna!.
My best performance was on the medium distance on day 3...an old army base (we are used to these in Ireland..think Curragh, Kilworth, Magilligan, Finner, etc). Managed 14th out of 42 finishers. I was delighted to beat 2 who made the A sprint final at WMOC in Hungary.

Given that 5 of the top 10 overall were in the A final long distance at WMOC and the winner is a 5 day time cross country ski world champion, add in the top Austrians who were not at WMOC, I was happy to complete the competition in 23rd place. The biggest challenge was the variety of scales used. Day 1 started with a 1:7,500 and then switched to a 1; 4,000 half way through...confusing one to begin the competition with! They seemed to be big into 1;7,500 on massive A3 sheets which can be confusing due to the number of times you have to refold the map.
