Bluebells in Castlecomer, Pat Healy strikes again

Launch of the Permanent Orienteering courses at Castlecomer to coincide with the SEL 13 event organised by Wato. Huge thanks to Pat Healy who mapped the Discovery Park and helped install the permanent courses without a JCB. Thanks also to Liz Nolan from the CDP who encouraged the venture. Thanks also to Angela who controlled the registration for the event. The feedback on the map and courses from the almost 100 participants was most positive. Castlecomer Launch

Waterford Orienteers will host the penultimate round of the Southeast orienteering league on Sunday 12th May in the splendid setting of Castlecomer Discovery Park. Set in the former grounds of the Wandesford Estate, Castlecomer Discovery Park is located just under 20km north of Kilkenny City. It comprises 80 acres of stunning natural woodland, is an approved Discover Primary Science centre and provides Primary and Secondary Education programmes. This relatively ‘young park’ began as a community project to rejuvenate the town of Castlecomer following the closure of the coal mines in 1969 and opened to the public in 2007.

 

The usual blue, green, light green and red courses will be on offer. The area has been mapped by Pat Healy at 1 to 5,000 scale. The 3 newly created permanent orienteering courses, (1 -3km) approved by the Irish Orienteering Association, will be officially launched at 11am. All are invited to be there to lend support to this fantastic new  initiative. Courses will open immediately after the launch. Beginners are welcome at a fee of €2 per map.

• Discover the fascinating Coal Mining Museum which comprises a 45 minute tour through Castlecomer’s coal mining past. This fascinating exhibition is an interactive,  multi-media display that takes the visitor on a journey through time. Starting with the formation of the coal 300 million years ago, it brings the visitor through more than 300 years of coal mining history to the closure of the mines in 1969.

• Try out the new Tree Top Adventure Walk, Leap of Faith and Climbing Wall....need to ring to ensure availability in advance 056 – 4440707.
• The Bridgestone award winning Jarrow cafe serves beautifully made healthy food - well worth a munch before ambling outside again to enjoy the fabulous craft workshops in the former stable yard.

A nominal parking fee of €2 applies for the entire day but if you eat in the café above the value of €15 this will be refunded - parking is in the carpark. Registration will be immediately to the right on entrance to the car park

Tramore results posted

A massive 164 took part at the event on Sunday at Tramore.

Munster League event at Tramore

Our next club event will be the Sunday after Easter in Tramore on April 7th. This is a SE and Munster league event. Start times as usual between 11 and 1 at the end of the carpark. Brown to yellow courses ranging from 2.3 to 7.6km. Anyone bringing a group should let us know in advance to ensure enough maps are printed. Anyone planning to run in the Leinster championships at Cahore, County Wexford on the following Sunday should make a big effort to compete in Tramore.

Kennedy park results

A huge thank you to Nigel, Jeni and Robert Pim for organising todays SE league 11 event at Kennedy Park. Full results are now posted on the IOA website.

Please note that 228 on the Blue course disappeared half way through the competition. If anyone has any idea where the Sport ident unit went to, please contact me. A number of entrants punched 214 (the kite used at the start box) but not the actual start. I adjusted the start times. A number forgot to punch the finish and had to go back to the finish kite between the 2 monkey puzzle trees.
Due to our commitment to host the Munster Primary and Secondary schools events at Colligan wood on March 13th and March 14th respectively, the next club event will be in Tramore on April 7th. This is one week before the Leinster club champs at Carnsore dunes on April 14th.

Woodstock results

Results from event at Woodstock today are posted on the IOA website here. This include Route Gadget which allows you to mark where you think you ran! It is a useful exercise in analysing your route choice. You can compare with other people to see the optimum route.

The next round of the Southeast league takes place on Sunday 3rd at Kilbarry Nature Park. start times from 11 until 1. Please park in the RSC carpark and register at the East stand. You should NOT go to the Kingfisher side.

Slievecoilltia results

Full results from today's event at Slievecoilltia are posted. Something strange happened with the distances. The correct ones were: Blue 8.2 km, Green 7.1km, Light green 4.7 km, Red 4.0 km, Yellow 1.4km
The weather favoured the first starters...a beautiful morning turning to sleety showers at the end.
90 entrants took part so a good start to 2013.

Tower Hill event

the 7th round of the SE league takes place at Tower Hill, Portlaw on Sunday 9th December with starts between 11 and 12.30. Signposts from the village of Portlaw.

End of Halloween holiday events

At the end of Halloween, we welcome the Irish Junior Squad to Waterford for training.
On Friday 2nd November, Tramore sand dunes will be the venue at 1.00. Any club members aged 12 to 18 who can get around at least a light green course on their own are welcome to join the squad if they notify Andrew Cox before then.
On Saturday 3rd November, the squad will do relay training at Woodstock, Inistioge from 11 to 1. The courses will be open at 1.00 for those who would like to do a sprint/short course run. there will be a 4km run for adults and 2.5 for younger club members.
On Sunday 4th November, round 5 of the SE league will take place at Brandon Hill, Graiguenamanagh with a range of colour coded courses from yellow to Brown on the day. Usual start times from 11 to 1.

Award for Neil Dobbs

Neil Dobbs (HVO)

For the past 18 months, Neil Dobbs has been a key member of HVO’s somewhat-stretched volunteer corps. Neil’s work visa will expire shortly, and he must return to his native Ireland. However, during a relatively short period, Neil has accomplished much -- all on a completely voluntary basis.

He was Course Setter for the 2011 Team Trials -- Neil was much more than the course setter for the Sprint, Middle and Long Distance races, by which the Team representing the USA at the World Orienteering Championships was selected. When the proposed Sprint venue backed out, Neil was instrumental in not only finding a replacement in Purchase College of the State University of New York (SUNY), but in negotiating its use and overseeing the fast-track production of a new ISSOM-standard map. Besides the Team Trials courses – Red and Blue, which were OUSA-sanctioned races – Neil also designed a complete set of spectator/recreational courses (White through Green) for each day.
He has organized courses designed to involve new people with the sport, and was the “savior” of the 2012 Northeast Junior Training Camp when the planned housing suddenly was not available. Many, many other things were instituted by Neil and he was exceedingly valuable to the club while he was here in the U.S.

Tramore results

The 3rd Southeast league event took place on Sunday 23rd in Tramore as part of the Surf and Sea festival. Thanks to Andrew and Liisa for organising the event and to Nigel and Robert for help with download. Cleaning up the contours was worth the effort.




The first of the schools training events took place at Woodstock on 17th September. Thanks to Hugh, Laura and Kim for their help on the day. Results and pictures are posted on the IOSG blog.
