Carriganore event

Waterford Orienteering club will host the next round of the SE short course orienteering series at Carriganore, WIT in Waterford City on Sunday 9th November. Grid reference S 559 116.
Start times from 11 to 1. Please let me know well in advance if you are bringing a group.
There will be extra maps on the day but participants are encouraged to register online. Here is the link to Google Docs
There is no pre payment and there is no worry if you cannot make it on the day. It just helps with planning numbers of maps.



Huge numbers participated at the Deise Days weekend.
Over 185 competed at Castlecomer Discovery Park with the newly mapped quarry section proving a big hit. Thank you to: Norman Storey who organised the parking with the able assistance of Linda; to Elizabeth and Angela for manning registration; Laura who looked after download; Pat Healy Controller; POC, Nigel and Andrew P on starts.

The Waterford Viking 1100 urban sprint race attracted 130 enthusiastic runners and walkers. Thanks to all those who manned the mandatory crossings including Jerry, Hugh and Alan; to Andrew as chief organiser on the day; Angela, Liisa, Jeni and Liz on the start; Laura and Jana on the computer; Elizabeth on registration. Apologies to anyone I forgot.

SE league event postponed

Please note that the SE league event proposed for October 5th at the Towers in Lismore is postponed until a later date. This is due to the clash with the Northern Ireland championships weekend on November 4th and the forthcoming Deise Days weekend planning and mapping.
Other events:
28th September: event organised by CorkO at Doneraile Park in County Cork as the Cliona Callanan Memorial Event (All proceeds to Cork Children's Leukaemia Association)
12th October: Munster league at Glengarra wood, County Tipperary organised by CorkO

Permanent Orienteering course launched at Kennedy Park

Displaying the maps

August 24th marked the launch of 4 permanent orienteering courses at Kennedy park, New Ross, County Wexford  as part of National Heritage week.
Maps and courses were planned by Pat Healy and Andrew Cox. This was a joint venture between Waterford Orienteering club and the Office of Public Works.
Anybody who is interested in orienteering will be able to download maps from the OPW website for Kennedy Park. There are 4 courses: long, medium, short and wheelO. The latter is suitable for both wheelchairs and buggies.

Woodstock event

The 2nd round of the SE league will take place at Woodstock gardens, County Kilkenny on Sunday 7th September. Signposted from Inistioge village with starts from 11 to 1.
Course: long (4.1km, 22 controls), medium (3.2 km, 19 controls) and short (1.9km, 10 controls)

New season starts

Waterford Orienteers will host the first Southeast league event of the 2014-15 season at Kennedy Park, County Wexford  on Sunday 24th August. This will be part of National Heritage week and starts will be between 11 and 1. Short, medium and long courses on offer.

A new Permanent Orienteering course will be launched at 1.

Kilkenny Craic weekend

Tickincor review

A huge thanks to Thomas Callery and Pat O'Connor who planned and organised the event at Tickincor. Full results are now posted. At the end there were a small number who found the controls had been collected so I gave them in the results. The longer courses were won in good times (50 minutes on blue) which showed the experience of those who opted for the blue course. 205 proved almost inaccessible and depended on which way you made it through the windblow and the felled areas which were unclear on the map as there was computer crash just as courses were being finalised. It suited the more agile. This area is due for a remap during the summer. We hope that it did not put anyone off orienteering. It may be wise for some entrants to opt for the shorter courses with less technical difficulty. Thank you to all those who pre-entered as it made less work on the day of the event.

Woodstock cancelled

In case anybody missed the email I sent out, the Woodstock event planned for Sunday 9th March is cancelled due to storm damage. The landowners felt they were not in a position to let us in there just yet. Apologies to all those who were planning to come.

Lismore Instructors course

Lismore Heritage Centre hosted club members, Andrew Cox and Norman Storey who organised a basic instructors course for 7 enthusiastic participants. The venue for the morning session was the Towers whilst several young people were press ganged into taking part in Lismore park in the afternoon.

Permanent Orienteering Courses

Following on from the launch of POC's in Castlecomer Discovery park and Kilkenny castle (reports elsewhere on this blog), we hope to launch a POC at Kennedy park on 27th February at the SE schools competition and at the Towers Lismore shortly. These will be a great resource for training young people in the future and as an outing when there is not any formal orienteering. Thanks to Pat Healy for his assistance with the mapping.

Results for the first SE league can now be found in the sidebar to the left of this blog. Later runners had a disadvantage of poor weather conditions and at the end control 202 gave up the ghost!

Launch of POC at Kilkenny Castle

Well done to all those who completed courses today at Kilkenny Castle. There was a great range from beginners to experts and old timers, from 5 year olds from the Marble city to scouts from Kells, from local Cats to the men and women from the short grass county (Kildare) and the Deise to the Rebels.
We have waited many years to get permission to use Kilkenny Castle and were delighted with the response from the Mayor who launched a new permanent orienteering course in the Castle grounds and the OPW who put in the stakes.

A huge thanks to Pat Healy  and Gary Gordon who between them helped cut through the red tape. Pat was busy this morning drilling on plaques for the POC whilst I was setting out the long, medium and short courses for the punters.
Huge thanks to all the OPW staff for their help. Thanks to Angela on registration and Laura on computer for helping ensure everyhthng went off smooothly.

Special mention to Veronica Purcell who noticed the first control on the short course was in the wrong location...anybody else? A  fuller report and pictures will follow.
